Natabua High School’s Setareki Dawai set a new record in the intermediate boys’ discus at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Finals at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium yesterday.
The 17-year-old threw 49.89 metres to break the previous record of 49.35m set in 2015 by Josua Serukilagi of Queen Victoria School (QVS).
Speaking to SUNsports, Dawai said he had been confident heading into the event.
“I was determined to win gold. This is my second gold in this event. I won the junior boys’ discus last year and hope to continue next year,” he said.
The Dratabu, Nadi, native said the result reflected months of tough training.
“We went through tough training, and now it’s all worth it,” he said.
Dawai said despite challenges along the way, he managed to win gold and set a new record.
“I thank God for His protection and for being my source of strength. Without Him, I would not have been able to win gold,” he said.
He also acknowledged the support of his school, ex-scholars and supporters.
