The Ba Provincial Freebird Institute Dragons have opted to put on the underdog tag in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League Under-15 final against Ratu Kadavulevu School Eels next week.

This was after they scored an upset 10-0 win over Queen Victoria School Knights in today’s U15 semifinal at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

Speaking to SUNsports, the Dragons U15 assistant coach Krishant Reddy said they hope to put on a better performance in the final.

“We have been working on this for a long time,” he said.

“We knew the potential of the boys and the win today was not a surprise because we have seen their progress throughout the competition.”

The Lautoka-based school kept to the basics as they controlled the tempo of the game. They kept up with their tight defence.

“We are lucky to have some experienced coaches with us from other grades who gave us tips,” Reddy said.

He indicated that the Dragons success in rugby league is due to their four- year development programme.

“We have a good number of supporters coming from our school. The hostel students, parents and old scholars who have been supporting the team.”

Dragons U15 captain Isoa Taqiri said he is grateful to his teammates for a sterling performance.

Taqiri said he looks up Nathan Cleary of the Penrith Panthers for inspiration.

The Nukutubu, Rewa, lad hopes to represent the Fiji Bati rugby league team as a first five eight in the future.

Other semifinal result:

Under-19: Naitasiri Warriors 26-22 Ba Provincial Freebird Institute Dragons.
