Draunivau Sharks maybe a new name to many rugby sevens followers in the country.

But in fact they have been playing in the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament for the past 14 years under Kalokolevu Tigers or Senibua.

Sharks manager Beniamino Rawakerei said yesterday they decided to come out with something new this year.

“We’re confident of putting on a good performance in this year’s tournament,” he told SUNsports.

Rawakerei said they are going to play in this weekend’s Uluinakau Sevcns as a build-up to the Marist Sevens tournament.

“This going to be an ideal way to prepare and give our players more game time.”

The Marist Sevens will be on March 23-24 at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

“Over the years the club has changed its name but we still have the same aim to try and get into the cup quarterfinals and we are positive that we can do it. In 2016 we participated and reached the elimination round.”

Rawakerei added that their rugby programme was established to help young people address problems like peer pressure.

‘We’ve seen that it has helped our players a lot. Most of these boys live along the Queens Rroad from Naboro to Veisari.

“So rugby is a way for them to get their minds off things like peer pressure and drugs.

“With the help of our overseas sponsors, we can see that the boys have really taken interest in the sport which is really positive for us,” he added.
