Duavata Secondary School aims to defy the odds and top the Macuata Zone One medal tally.
The rural-based school in the Udu district, of Macuata, brought 57 athletes to the two-day zonal meet at the All Saints Secondary School ground, Labasa, yesterday.
The school’s sports committee member, Tuilawaki Dokana, told SUNsports the team is there to challenge for the title.
Dokana said past year experiences of competing at the zone have motivated the athletes that winning their event is possible.
“From past years our team have done well in their performances so we want to keep it up to that standard or go even higher,” he said.
When asked on how many gold medals they are aiming for, Dokana said, they have set a target of 23.
“Each athlete is tasked to compete for medals to help us in the overall standing,” he said.
Last year, DSS finished fourth on the medal tally with 37 athletes competing.
Schools competing in the zone are: All Saints Secondary School, Bulileka Sanatan College, Naleba College, Duavata Secondary, Labasa Sangam (SKM) College, Valebasoga Secondary, Holy Family Secondary, Batinikama College, Nadogo College and Shri Guru Nanak Khalsa College.
The competition continues today.
