Fiji Babaas Confirmed for Nahehevia 7s

“These two teams are preparing for the Olympic Games and other teams are aware of their struggles in the 2023/2024 HSBC SVNS series,” Kurisese said.

The Fiji Bitter Nahehevia Sevens tournament co-ordinator, Marika Kurisese said the inclusion of the Fiji Babaas and Mount Masada teams is a big boost for grassroots rugby.

This, he said, has elevated the standard of the two-day competition, which starts tomorrow at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

The Fiji Babaas contain members of the Fiji men’s rugby sevens training squad while the national women’s players make-up the Mount Masada squad.

“These two teams are preparing for the Olympic Games and other teams are aware of their struggles in the 2023/2024 HSBC SVNS series,” Kurisese said.

“Most of the players participating in this weekend’s tournament are vying for a spot in the national sevens men’s and women’s teams.”

Kurisese said there would be stiff competition among the teams to stack up points in the overall Fiji Bitter 7s series standings.

“In the series points table, every point gained is valuable as the teams are close to each other,” he said.

“We should expect a very tight competition in all games.”

Kurisese said a tree planting exercise would be held today as part of their sustainability project.

“The exercise will take place in the compound of Waicoba District School and Sigatoka Valley Secondary School with students involved as well,” he said.

“We faced a lot of challenges with the effects of deforestation, and we want to enlighten these students that the best solution to deforestation is tree planting.”

Kurisese said national men’s sevens coach Ben Gollings and agent Sireli Bobo would be present throughout the tournament.

“We would like to apologise to the spectators around Fiji that we won’t be covering the tournament live on Fiji TV or FBC TV, but we encourage them to attend the games.”

Kurisese said the organising committee would follow appropriate procedures in an event of unfavourable weather conditions.
