Playing at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s after 19 years, Gau Kacau Knights managed to establish a spot in the first elimination round where they were walloped by Hideaway Hurricanes 24-5 at the ANZ Stadium, Suva last night.

Gau beat Navuso in their pool opener 10-0 lost to defending champions Tabadamu Blue 12-0 and edged out Westerland Natadra Young Boys 12-5 in their final pool match to book a spot in the elimination round against Hideaway Hurricanes.

Captain Jona Saumaisue said they want to thank their province for supporting the team.

“They’ve contributed a lot to this tournament,” he said.

“This team was formed in 1997 but we’re grateful to our elders for reviving it.”

Saumaisue is the son of former national 7s rep Samu Saumaisue who was one of the founders of the club.

“We don’t have any sponsor for this team but I’m happy with the support of our families and friends. Reaching the elimination is something that all the participating teams always dream of. For us coming this far it’s mission accomplished.”

The team comprised of players from Gau island and included some players who are now based in Suva.

“This is also part of our development plan in the island in getting young players to expose their talents in this type of competition,” Saumaisue added.”
