Fiji Survives Early Scare, Uruguay Next

The Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens team survive an early scare to beat Kenya 31-12 in their Pool C opener of the Vancouver Sevens tournament in Canada, this morning.

Kenya dominated the first restart to lead 5-0 from a try to Herman Humwa, which was not converted. The Fijians took time to settle down for a slender 12-5 lead at halftime after tries from Josese Batirerega and Anasa Qaranivalu with Waisea Nacuqu landing one conversion.

Kenya fought back to level the scores 12-12 with a converted try to Alvin Otieno. Then it was all Fiji with Batirerega getting his second try while Jeremaia Matana scored twice.

The Fijians take on Uruguay today at 2.14pm.

Men’s results: Great Britain 45-5 Uruguay, Fiji 31-12 Kenya, South Africa 19-19 France, Argentina 31-12 Japan, Samoa 31-19 Spain, New Zealand 52-0 USA, Ireland 35-5 Canada.
