Digicel Fiji Under-19 women’s goalkeeper Mereseini Waqali saved a penalty in the first half in their 1-0 win over New Caledonia in the quarterfinal of the OFC Women’s U19 Championship in Suva on Saturday night.
Waqali stood her ground and made several spectacular saves to the delight of the Fiji supporters who were at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Fiji U19 women’s coach Angeline Chua said it was the tabusoro (never give up) spirit from her players from the opening whistle to the last was the very reason behind the win.
It was after several missed chances in the second half, replacement striker Seruwaia Laulaba sent in a cross and the ball was fumbled by the New Caledonian goalkeeper, which was controlled by Ema Mereia before slotting in the winning goal.
The Fijians face Samoa in the semifinal on Wednesday. The Samoans upset Tahiti 4-3 on penalty kicks in their quarterfinal clash on Saturday.
