Fijiana Ready for Dubai and Cape Town 7s

With next year’s Paris Olympic Games spot confirmed, the Fiji Airways Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team is looking forward to the upcoming Dubai and Cape Town tournaments.

The tournaments mark the opening of the HSBC SVNS 2023 season, with the Dubai tournament set for December 2-3 followed the Cape Town event on December 9-10.

Fijiana sevens head coach Saiasi Fuli has a 16-member squad undergoing intense training with 13 players to go to the opening tournaments.

“We cannot wait to hit the road for the Dubai and Cape Town 7s, following our successful qualification for the Olympic Games,” Fuli said. The team has been in camp since October, which included the recruitment and training of new talents for the broader squad.

Fuli said the players are fit and physically ready for the new season as they have been making sure no stone is left unturned during pre-season.

With half of the extended squad representing Fiji at the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, another group has undergone a week-long training in Suva.

Fuli highlighted the advantage of having two teams.

“Having two teams is good for us because it shows the depth that we have compared to the past two seasons.

“Now we have a wider pool to pick players from and will be able to rotate as well.”

The Fijiana sevens side is in Pool A alongside New Zealand, Great Britain and South Africa.

Their first match is against Great Britain on Saturday, December 2, at 5:44pm (Fiji time), followed by South Africa at 8:43pm and New Zealand on Sunday, December 3, at 1:35am.
