Fijiana will face Great Britain at 8:30 pm in a battle for an Olympic bronze medal.
They went down 22 -17 in extra time, in a physical encounter with New Zealand.
Fiji pressured the Kiwis in their own half and were tight in their defence.
Fiji led 7-5 at half time with a try from Vasiti Solikoviti. She scored her second in the second half but it was not successfully converted.
New Zealand scored another two and took the lead, 17-12, in the final minutes. Halfback, Reapi Ulunisau, dived for Fiji's third try to level the scores. The conversion was unsuccessful.
They were tied at 17 at full time.
The Black Ferns had the possession in the first 3 minutes of extra time until they crossed over with a try to secure a final spot.
In the second semi finals, France defeated Great Britain, 29-19.
