The Ex-Fiji Football Reps Association (EFFRA) has welcomed assistance from fans to assist former national reps who are in need of medical assistance.

EFFRA president John Grey appealed to fans across the globe to understand the plight faced by former national football reps who are now sickly.

“We were part of a breed of footballers who were driven by passion and made enormous sacrifice, to achieve the goals of our supporters and districts in Fiji,” Grey, the former Suva and national goalkeeper said.

“We bonded with other players sharing the same goal that created many strong teams of great individuals. We were selected to serve our country and we succeeded at various levels.”

Grey added that these players are retired, unemployed and are struggling daily to make ends meet.

He said the appeal was targeted to give these former national footballers a new lease of life.

Grey confirmed that George Koi, the man who captained the Fijian team to beat Australia 1-0 in 1977, had a heart attack last week and spent a few days in hospital.

“He was sent home but needed more attention.

“EFFRA reached out to our members to fund oxygen to keep George alive at home and we funded the first cylinder, which was about $1200. Any other assistance will be appreciated,” Grey said.

Furthermore, one of the motivators of EFFRA, Nemani Waka, is on a wheelchair in Sydney, Australia and is thankful for the formation of the organisation

Canada based- Sylvester Joseph has been in hospital for the past three years going through life saving surgeries and yet he has funded many EFFRA functions and health matters for our members.

Tevita Delana, a member of the historic 1977 Fiji team is in a retirement home in Melbourne, Australia.

Also, former star striker Taito Bula is bedridden at his home in Nailaga Village, Ba.

Former Fijian national coach John Lal and goalkeeper are bedridden and on full time care in homes in Sydney.

“This is what EFFRA is all about. We reach out to all of you former lovers of Fiji Soccer and ask for your assistance to the fundraising. Your donations will be acknowledged and appreciated,” said Grey.

Meanwhile, former Ba football players had their first meeting at Gujarati ground last Saturday.

The former star players who attended the meeting included Semi Tabaiwalu, Lote Delai, Ravuama Madigi, Jo Basudra, Mosese Soro, and Teti Vosa.
