Gospel High School (GHS) has identified several potential athletes following its inter-house athletics competition held at the National Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Athletics coach Watisoni Delana said the school hopes to improve on last year’s performance at the Fiji Finals.

More than 100 students took part in the one-day competition, which marked the beginning of the school’s athletics season.

“The inter-house meet was an important first step in the athletics season,” Delana said.

“We have identified some promising athletes, especially in the 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and also in the 1500 metres.”

GHS won a bronze medal at last year’s Fiji Finals. Delana also acknowledged former students Younis Bese and Aaron Powell, who created history for the school by winning the senior girls and boys blue ribbon events respectively.

“We are a small school competing against bigger schools, but our aim is to improve from last year. This year we hope to do better,” he said.

In the girls’ division, John House finished first, followed by Luke House, Matthew House and Mark House.

In the boys’ division, Matthew House claimed first place while Luke House finished second. John House placed third and Mark House finished fourth.

Delana thanked parents and the school administration for supporting the inter-house competition.

He also encouraged supporters to attend the zone meet scheduled for March 17–18.
