The Kadavu rugby team is ready to stamp their mark in this year’s Vodafone Vanua Championship competition.

Speaking to SUNsports from their camp at Nasigatoka Village on Thursday, vice-captain, Tuimasi Tubananitu, said this is one of their goals.

Kadavu and Taveuni are newcomers in the competition.

Tubananitu said they moved to Sigatoka last Sunday, to prepare for their opening clash against Navosa at Vatureba Park in Keiyasi next Saturday.

Today they face Nadroga in their final pre-season match.

“We camped at Namuana Village in Kadavu for two weeks,” he told SUNsports.

“Most of our players are farmers in Kadavu. We left for Suva last Saturday and attended our welcoming church service at Kinoya on Sunday before we headed down to Sigatoka.”

Tubananitu said they are very grateful to the villagers of Nasigatoka for allowing them to camp at their hall and give them this opportunity to develop their rugby.

“We’ve got some goals to achieve this year since it’s been a while we’ve had a team for Kadavu to come to a Fiji Rugby Union sanctioned competition.

“This is our first time to play in the Vodafone Vanua Cup.

“This is a challenge so we would call the people of Kadavu, who live in Viti Levu to come down and support for the team.

“We’re playing a warm-up game against Nadroga on Saturday and already we’re feeling what it’s like to lift our game.

“We’ll see what we can do on Saturday.”

Tubananitu’s namesake Tuimasi Tubananitu (Snr) was feared prop while he played for Suva and Fiji in the 1980s.

He was renowned for his bone crunching tackle that even floored the legendary All Blacks No.8 Murray Mexted.

The province of Kadavu has produced top rugby players like Amenatave Gutugutuwai, Mosese Nabati, Sireli Naqelevuki, Leone Nakarawa, Albert Tuisue, Simione Kuruvoli and the list goes on.
