Katonibau: Fijians Can

Fijians have limitless poten­tial to succeed at the highest level and need to set higher goals, according to former Fijian 7s captain Isake Katonibau.

Katonibau made the comments while sharing his experience as a commentator during the Cape Town Sevens this month.

Katonibau joined World Rugby commentators Sean Maloney of Australia and England’s Rob Vick­erman to call Fiji’s pool match against Japan in Cape Town.

He has described the experience as an exhilarating one and some­thing he will never forget.

Katonibau said he was grateful for the opportunity to commentate at a World 7s Series tournament and hopes to see more Fijians given the chance.

He said: “I am blessed and grate­ful for the boundless opportunities that are coming my way by the infi­nite grace of God.

“Thank You World Rugby for invit­ing me to be one of the commenta­tors at Cape Town.

“Thank You AYI Rugby for con­necting me with Gifts Perfected, who have allowed me to become as­sociated with designer brands from around the world.”

It is widely known that Fijian players are the best in the world in rugby’s abbreviated code.

Katonibau believes fans, and the game as a whole, will benefit from Fijians providing match analysis from the commentary booth on a regular basis.

“Fijians can do anything they de­sire,” he added

“We shouldn’t be limited to explor­ing or maximising our potential.

“Being the commentator at the Cape Town was really an awesome experience.”

Katonibau is currently the Rugby 7s consultant and the manager to the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side

With the Fijiana, Katonibau helps setup the defensive system and analyses opposition teams for head coach Saiasi Fuli.

As a player, Katonibau was a for­ward for the national 7s side.

He was part of the winning team that lifted its 15th Hong Kong 7s ti­tle in 2015.
