Ten athletes from Labasa College are participating in the Coca-Cola Games this year.

Although the number of participants is not as many compared to previous years, school team manager, Roneel Ram says the ten athletes are their best.

They are from Years Nine to 13.

Lynne Ethel, Daniel Wedlock, Lotus Naikobima and Tale Biulote will be participating in shot put.

Jayson Chand, Torika Tinaikivita, Rupeni Volai, Ratu Tevita, Paulini Ravakala are in for high jump/ long jump/ triple jump; while Avish Dayal is running the 800 meters and 1500m.

Ram said all athletes were fully vaccinated and excited to participate after two years. Cokes was called off in 2000 due to COVID-19.

“The school has been participating every year and in 2019 Rayash Kumar ran in the 1500 meters and 800 meters where he won one silver and bronze; Elizabeth Lidi won silver in high jump,” Ram said.

“We have won gold previously but that has been many years ago and hence this year we aim to bring gold when we return to Labasa.”

One of the biggest challenges the athletes are facing now is balancing Coke Games preparations (August 18-20) and mid-term exam which is next week.

“Labasa College is academically oriented and students are expected to perform well,” he said.

“However, since the school believes in holistic development of a child we want to allow them to use their talents.”

Ram is grateful that teachers have volunteered to get the students over to Viti Levu for the Coke Games, billeting, transportation and support.

“Mohammed Ikbal is in charge of taking the students across to Viti Levu and the school principal, teachers, parents have willingly supported us.”
