Sixteen-year-old Talei Uluinakauvadra will bolster Natabua High School’s Under-18 side in the Weet-Bix Raluve Trophy competition next weekend.
The Natabua High School Year 11 student is looking forward to the quarterfinal as she missed their previous matches because she had to attend the Fijiana Under-18 trials.
She hails from Waciwaci in Lakeba, Lau and has maternal links to Macuata.
“I think the Weet-Bix Raluve competition is a great way for young girls to demonstrate their rugby talent and skills,” Uluinakauvadra said.
Her determination is boosted by the fact that Lakeba is the home of top former national rugby reps like Ilisoni Taoba, Simon Raiwalui, Jikoibau Matawalu, former Flying Fijians captain Akapusi Qera and Henry Qiodravu to mention some.
“It is good to see the inclusion of young women in rugby especially at secondary school level. Great way to promote gender equality.
“I will play in the quarter-final for Natabua High School under-18 team.
“I missed the first two rounds because I had to attend the under-18 trials for the Fijiana team.
“I have been selected and now I am training for the Tabadamu 7s team and will play for the Amazon Lillian’s team.
Uluinakauvadra has been playing rugby since she was nine.
She also plays for Lillians Amazon and is the winning captain of the Nadi Under-19 women’s team that won ANZ Marama Championship.
She is the daughter of former school teacher and Oceania Rugby’s Tirani Uluinakauvadra
