National athletics rep Avikash Lal is keeping his fingers crossed in a bid to win a spot in the Commonwealth Games and also for the World Games later in the year.
The 22-year-old Votualevu, Nadi native came first in the SportsWorld Fun Run in Namaka, Nadi, yesterday.
He clocked 19.5 minutes in the 5.7 kilometre run and later in the day he competed at the Shop N Save Athletes Grand Prix at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
He finished second in the 800m race behind Samuela Railoa but later took out the 5000m.
“I’m training for the Commonwealth Games in the 5000m and 1500m. We had a trial and it was a good. I have been consistent but there is no competitor in the 5000m.”
Lal said he is confident of making the cut for the Gold Coast event despite his training as a cabin crew with our national airline, Fiji Airways.
“This will be my first Commonwealth Games as I want to represent Fiji. I’m having not much time in training due to work but I’m pulling things together,” he added.
