John Uluilakeba of Mahatma Ghandi Memorial School (MGM) not only won a gold medal but set a new record in the sub junior boys high jump final of the Fiji Finals in Suva today.

He cleared the bar at 1.77metres breaking International School’s Roko Uluiburotukula’s record of 1.75m set in 2024.

“I thought about the goodness of God that allowed me to break the record,” Uluilakeba said.

“I’m thankful to my family for their support.”

The 14-year-old Qelekuro, Tailevu, lad was also a gold medallist in the Fiji Primary Schools athletics championship in the Under-13 grade high jump last year.

“I’d also like to thank my coach Pio Qerewaqa who sacrificed his family time to train me on a daily basis,” Uluilakeba said.

“I was told to be grateful to God during my preparation.”

Uluilakeba acknowledged the MGM supporters present at the National Stadium.

“I dedicate this medal to my Dad because he took a leave from work to watch me today. At times he walked me to training every day.”
