Maria Tamotubiu (circled) is the woman behind the success of the Macuata women’s rugby team.
The Macuata Rugby Union is encouraging women to try out the sport by playing in their club competition.
MRU vice-president, Jioji Vuakaca, said the growth of the sport must engage the participation of women in the province.
An official invite has been posted on the MRU Facebook page to interested clubs who would like to be part of our women’s club competition.
He said this is the time to grow women’s rugby.
“Dates for the women’s club competition is expected to be released soon and we welcome any team that wants to be registered,”Vuakaca said.
The Macuata women’s side play in the Royal Tea Ranadi Cup competition.
Vuakaca said women’s coach, Motu Lalagavesi, would be on a lookout for potential players.
Lalagavesi said last season, they had close wins over Cakaudrove and Bua.
“The gap between us is closing.
So we have to be on top of our game in ensuring our women’s development programme is sustainable for future growth,” she said.
Vuakaca said the apparel support by BLK to the MRU would also see the women players wearing world class apparels for training and official purposes.
