Growing up in a village surrounded by rugby league players, Tavenisa Marama wants to be different.
She has set her goals to be the first national women’s rugby player from her village, Saru, tikina Vitogo and province of Ba.
The Year 11 student of Jasper Williams High School is a member of their Under-18 side participating in the Weet-Bix Raluve competition.
She is also part of the athletics team, she is representing JWHS in the 4x100 and 4x400 metres relay at the Coca-Cola Games.
Brought up by her single mother Torika Bula, Marama was always motivated to work hard.
“I want to represent Fiji in rugby and I know this is the first step,” she said.
“It is my first time playing rugby and I thank God for giving me the talent.
“There are always challenges and critics about girls playing rugby. I thank my family for their understanding and support.”
Her aunt Asilika Marama said: “I thank her for opting to play rugby. Even though it was her first time Tavenisa played well.
“I know she is capable of doing better.
“I did not stop her from playing rugby, she has always wanted to play rugby.
“She usually plays netball and athletics.
“We share maternal links to the Ratudradra’s and I think that’s where she got her talents from.”
