The Nakasi High School (NHS) athletics squad is aiming for a fourth place finish in the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Final (known as the Coca-Cola Games) at the National Stadium, Suva, next weekend.
Also, the other target is to win more medals compared to previous years.
Head coach Vito Vakaloloma told SUNsports that they prioritise the development of their athletes.
“We came sixth last year in the boy’s division with nine medals,” he said.
“We are a small school, but we try to set these types of goals.”
Vakaloloma said athletes need to follow proper processes during their training.
“If the proper processes aren’t followed then these athletes have improper training which can result in injuries.
“Our preparation is not only for the Fiji Finals but a few of our boys are also prepping for the Commonwealth and Oceania Games later in the year.”
Vakaloloma said the young athletes need proper exposure for development.
“Most of these students never took part in athletics when they were in primary school, and it sets up a good foundation for them in the new year.
“We just focused on speedwork and to maintain discipline, which is the main thing along with their mental strength.”
The NHS athletics squad is made up of 39 students.
“Unity and teamwork will be ur biggest strength in the Fiji Finals. I want to wish the maritime schools the best in their zone competition next week.”
Vakaloloma added that any support towards the Maritime schools in cash or kind will be much appreciated.
