Natabua High School’s (NHS) Josevata Tuinavitilevu and Storm Naivalu were crowned champions of the Lautoka Zone 100 metres at Churchill Park, yesterday.

At the end of Day One, NHS led the boys’ medal tally with 10 gold medals, while Jasper Williams High School (JWHS) topped the girls’ division with eight gold medals. Tuinavitilevu, who hails from Bua in Vanua Levu with maternal links to Namosi said he was confident competing on the track despite recovering from an injury. He finished fifth in last year’s Fiji Finals (Coca-Cola Games) 100m final and hopes to improve his performance this year.

“I will do my best this year. It is not an easy competition with the boys from Suva but this year will be different,” the 18-year-old told SUNsports.

Naivalu is from Nacula in Yasawa, claimed the senior girls’ 100m. Naivalu said she was not satisfied with her performance and strongly believes she can do better.

“I know the competition in Suva will be tough. I am fully focused on my training and follow what my coach tells me,” she said.

Zone president Jupendra Narayan said chief guest Waisale Serevi delivered a strong message to the athletes.

“The message was don’t rest on your past competitions—make your school proud.” Narayan added that the fine weather boosted the athletes as they continue to perform well in their respective events.
