The Ovalau women’s rugby team has set their plans for next year’s Royal Tea Ranadi Cup competition.

Ovalau women’s rugby manager Bud Filipo told SUNsports yesterday that they have learned a lot of lessons in this year’s competition.

“One of the important lessons is to organise more games for our women so they could have a lot of game time,” he said.

Filipo said this was evident when they played against teams who had players who were playing a lot of rugby.

Having more game time gives players a lot of experience and builds up on their fitness as well.

“We’ve failed to qualify for the Royal Tea Ranadi Cup quarterfinal and learning our lessons, we should come out a much stronger team next year.”

Filipo said the Ovalau men’s and Under-20 teams have made the quarterfinals.

“More game time will only help our women showcase their talent. We have five clubs in the women’s club competition so there is a gradual development,” he said.

“We had one player from Suva that travels daily to Ovalau to play in the weekend matches.”

Filipo has called on the Fiji Rugby Union’s development unit to consider a few players form the Ovalau women’s team for the High Performance Unit and also for the Fijian Drua squad.

“The women’s coach has told me that they’ll have a one week break before they continue with their preparation for the Ovalau club games,” he added.
