The Petero Sports Tours and the Petero Civoniceva Foundation have been busy in the community since their return to Fiji post COVID.
Petero’s Sports Tours is an organisation that brings sporting groups, teams and organisations to Fiji where they have an opportunity to support the health, education, sports and fitness charity, the Petero Civoniceva Foundation.
Since the Foundation was established in 2014 it has always been their ethos to “give back” and now in recent years climate change has become a prevalent issue around the world and the Foundation has been exploring ways to contribute to the environments they work in across Fiji.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Forestry, The Kiwa Initiative and Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, the Petero Civoniceva Foundation and Petero’s Sports Tours have been planting the Damanu Hardwood trees that are native to the dry beach forest climates of the Sigatoka sand dunes.
Petero’s Sports Tours director and Foundation co- founder Chris Tomlinson said, “This initiative is a great way for the individuals we bring from overseas, often young students, to see first-hand the impact climate change has on the world. We aim that by helping to offset their carbon footprint they are making a positive contribution to a better world.”
“As a national park we are keen to preserve this natural beauty and do all we can to see it serve the people of Fiji way beyond all our lifetimes”
Petero’s Sports Tours are targeting 400 trees planted by April 2024 and are already well underway with 200 solid oak seedlings being planted in the last few weeks by visiting groups including Caloundra State High School from Queensland and Trinity Grammar School from Melbourne.
“So often it is easy to walk past and believe this is a problem for other people but now is the time to be proactive and help save our planet.”
“We are extremely grateful that our visiting groups are so keen to help out and get their hands dirty planting the seedlings. It has been great to see the next generation take such a proactive step in being planet -conscious individuals.”
We hope this becomes a sustainable initiative and one we can build on for years to come.” –Petero Civoniceva Foundation
