Single mother Kalolaini Raga is breaking barriers in the Fiji Amateur Boxing scene.

Raga wants to be a certified boxing referee/judge.

“I’m glad to be part of the one-week FABA (Fiji Amateur Boxing Association) Level 1 seminar programme,” she said.

“I can jump into the ring as a certified referee after the completion of the programme and gaining my accreditation,”

Raga is one of the seven participants for the FABA referee/judge seminar programme.

“I am passionate about combat sports like karate, taekwondo and hapkido,” she said.

“We didn’t have much competition for women in boxing back those days.

“I’ve been judging amateur boxing bouts in tournaments the last two years,” she said.

Raga is a Police constable by profession, she juggles her time with work and her role as a single mother to four children to find time for boxing as a judge.

“I would spend my whole Saturday at Stan Brown Boxing gym for a tournament. I would start at 6am and leave the gym around 7 or 8pm.”

Raga has urged women around the country to join FABA and take up the Level 1 Seminar Coaching and Referee/Judge Seminar.

Raga had indicated a potential growth of female participation with FABA within the next five years.

The Golden Gloves Championship begins tomorrow at the Stan Brown Boxing gym and ends on Saturday.
