Winger tells why he missed 7s selection
Robust Police winger Sakeo Railoa is confident of making the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team to play in the Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Speaking to SUNsports during the Nawaka Sevens yesterday he said that he needs to do his part in order to be selected into the national 7s team.
“My aim is to make the cut for the Hong Kong Sevens,” he said.
“The competition of being selected always gets into the last twelve which is very tough. “I have to do my part to prove my selection. At the end of the day we have to wait but I’m putting my hands up now as I want to represent my country.”
Railoa said a lot has been said in the media about his inclusion into the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s extended squad.
“I thank the media for their thoughts but it’s the coach who makes the final decision and we’ve to respect that.”
The former Nasinu Secondary School’s 100metres sprinter is the cousin of France rugby centre turned wing Virimi Vakatawa.
Railoa said he had injured his knee during the Congo Waimanu Sevens and did not train while in camp with the national sevens extended squad.
“I was in camp with the team but was cleared to play on Thursday. I had a break and I hope to play well this weekend,” he added.
The Police 7s team beat Seniboro 12-0 in their pool opener before edging out Sorokoba 12-7. They lost their final pool game 10-7 to Draulu but managed to qualify and win their elimination clash against Suva Stallions 17-14 last night.
They are led by former national 7s forward Sitiveni Waqa, Meli Kurisaru, former Fiji Bati winger Timoci Ratulolo, Rusiate Matai and Kepony Paul.
