Bad weather forced the cancellation of the Marist Brothers High School’s interhouse at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, yesterday. The competition coordinator said the event will be completed on Monday after the Nakasi High School interhouse.
High jumper Viliame Tukidia is focusing on working on his technique, weight and flexibility before the Coca-Cola Games.
Tukidia said this was important as he sets his sights on breaking his personal best of 1.70m that won him the gold medal in 2019.
Missing out last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cakaudrove native has plans to improve in his first year participation in the intermediate boys category.
He is one of MBHS gold medal prospect at the Coke Games.
Speaking to SUNsports Tukidia said it would take time to prepare and return to top form.
“The one year break was quite tough even though it was a blessing but training was not that consistent for me,” he said.
“To win this year I have to change my technique from the usual scissors. I’m now encouraged by my coach to take wide steps since I’m short.
“I’ve put on a few kilos compared to 2019 and I guess the pandemic contributed to that so I have been working very hard to see that I could drop a few kilos to match my flexibility.
“I’ve started running lately and I know a lot of morning runs with proper diet will help me drop a few kilos.
“The interhouse will really help me gauge my weight so I can work more on it.
“I’ve to focus on my flexibility training. I have to start stretching more, with a bit of yoga, tai-chi and pilates to help my body loosen up.
“I’ve been doing a lot of knees to chest and seat stretch with the hope that it will help me more.”
Tukidia added this year’s Coke Games would be special for him and his school.
“I hope I win again this year but first things first I have to focus on the Zone before the Cokes,” he said.
