The 2021 FMF Ratu Sukuna Bowl theme “Together We Can,” says a lot about the two Forces sacrifices in trying to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

These were words of the head of the Police Special Response Unit, Senior Superintendent of Police Livai Driu, during the launch at Nasova yesterday.

Driu said they are preparing to defend the 70th Ratu Sukuna Bowl on December 17.

“It depicts our joint efforts, during this pandemic as members of the disciplined forces, supporting Government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19,” he said.

“It also depicts the joint efforts of all Fijians and our collective will to get out of the situation where our nation has come through and impacted on this pandemic.”

Police thrashed the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) 32-8 in last year’s encounter.

Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment (3FIR) Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Penioni Naliva in his Ratu Sukuna Bowl challenge indicated that they are going for a win.

“We take on the challenge each year, whether we win or lose,” Lt.Col Naliva said.

“The challenge for us this year is winning the Sukuna Bowl for our families.

“I’m sure no team wants to lose, but I’m very sure the Sukuna Bowl is coming back to the Queen Elizabeth Barracks this year.”

In his response, Driu said Police would prefer to go in as underdogs.

Former rugby greats who have played in the Bowl challenge includes Esala Teleni, Rupeni Ravonu, Severo Koroduadua, Kolinio Rakoroi, Elia Rokowailoa, Jope Tuikabe, Pita Naruma and the list goes on.
