Flying Fijians forwards coach Jason Ryan walked through rugby forward basics with more than 20 teachers and coaches at Suva’s Bidesi Park on Wednesday.
Ryan said it was important that high school players know the basics and teachers are the best to teach them.
“Teachers are their first coaches, it is only proper that aspiring club, provincial and national reps get it right from the start,” Ryan said.
“It is important to get the basic fundamentals especially around the safety aspects,” he said.
“It’s great for me to come down here; I love these kinds of sessions. I initially started my career as a member of school team then gradually up to club level and so on.
“I can relate and it is great to give back to rugby.
“It’s good to see a lot of interest; the sessions have been really good.
“Hopefully they can take it to their teams and practice at the soonest.
“The teachers’ response were good, they are involved with students that is what makes this type of sessions important.
“It was a slow start but once they opened up we were able to exchange a lot of good information.
“It would be nice to have a session with high school teams; my role is to make sure that we are growing in all sectors or categories of rugby in building up professional players.
“As a coach you have to upskill yourself first, you are in a leadership role so you have to lead yourself first before you can lead your team and players.
“There are some good tools out there where they can draw information from now.”
