Boxer Sebastian Singh, facing assault charges, was remanded in custody by the Magistrate’s Court in Suva yesterday.
Singh appeared before Magistrate Joseph Daurewa charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
It is alleged that Singh assaulted his 22-year-old pregnant wife on December 22 in Suva, causing bodily harm.
The accused was represented by Avinesh Reddy of Reddy and Nadan Law, while Police Prosecutor Ghandi Prasad appeared for the state.
Reddy requested for bail on the grounds that Singh had no previous convictions.
However, Magistrate Daurewa denied the request based on the prosecution’s objections which said Singh’s wife was pregnant at the time of the alleged assault.
The Court also heard that Singh and the complainant have been separated for some time now.

The Magistrate ordered the defence counsel to file written submissions for bail within seven days, with prosecution given seven days thereafter to issue written responses.
The matter has been adjourned to January 13, 2020 for bail ruling.
