Solomon Islands women’s football national head coach Batram Suri is anticipating a tough match against Fiji at 7pm tomorrow at the HFC Bank Stadium.

The former Nadi football player said coaching the women’s side is quite different but he is ready for the challenges ahead.

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women Nations Cup opener today is between Samoa and Tonga at 7pm.

The Solomons are in Group C with Fiji and New Caledonia. They take on Fiji in their first game at 7pm tomorrow.

“I find it good for challenge, game style – how they play, I’m happy and proud of our women’s national team,” Suri said.

“We will play against the crowd when we play against the Fijian women national team.

“We are here for the challenge in front of us.

“I hope the Solomon Islanders here can support us.

“I believe we will have a good competition against Fiji.”

Suri was one of the region’s top talents through the 1990s and 2000s, representing the Solomon Islands at national level and playing club football in New Zealand, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tahiti and his homeland.

He previously coached the Solomon Islands U-19 men’s team to the semi-finals of the OFC U-19 Championship 2018 and had trained the nation’s U-23 men’s team to second place in the OFC Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament the following year.
