The Suva Rugby Union (SRU) looks to adopt a new format in this year’s Escott Shield and Koroturaga competitions.
SRU secretary Paula Raqeukai said they had applied for the adoption of the new format to the SRU Executive Games Committee (EGC) which was then endorsed later last year during their annual general meeting.
“The new format allows teams the opportunities to compete for the shield in both the Escott and the Koroturaga competitions,” Raqeukai said.
“We adopted it because we want to make our competitions livelier and it also gives teams the opportunity to win the shield in both divisions.”
However, he said, only the top eight teams would be able to hold on to the shield during the play-offs.
In cases of an early exit of the competition, for example losing out in the quarter and semifinals respectively meant forfeiting the shield to the SRUEGC.
“Also if for some instance wins the shield during the round robin challenges but fails to make it in to the top eight, they will be acknowledged as the SRU Escott or Koroturaga Shield winners. But will still have to forfeit their trophies to the SRUEGC and the shield will be given to the team that wins the grand finale.”
Prize monies will also be allocated for each challenge, with $200 to the winners, $100 to the losing challenger and $50 to the best player.
Raqeukai also confirmed the inclusion of a new Togalevu based- team called the Draunivau Sharks in the Koroturaga competition.
