The Fiji Swimming National Federation has announced that they are hosting the 2019 Long Course (LC) Age Group nationals at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre, Suva on May 10-12.

Fiji Swimming general manager David Dugu said this would be the ninth competition hosted this year.

“This will be the final locally hosted competition for the LC season,” he said.

“The LC season refers to the period between November of the previous year to May of the current year. The nationals are the final event of the season inviting swimmers to compete in a full three-day meet.”

Dugu said swimmers qualify to participate through meeting specified qualifying times achieved between May 4, 2018 to April 26, 2019.

“The LC season showcases swimmers competing in the 50-metre pool. At the conclusion of the competition next Sunday, we will enter into our Short Course (SC) season.

“Those competitions will feature meets in the 25-metre pool. The term 25-metre and 50-metre refers to the length of the swimming pool.

OVERSEAS CLUBS

“The 25-metre pools are typically called Short Course and 50-metre pools are called Long Course.”

Dugu said they are excited if the competition which would feature 10 local clubs, four visiting clubs including two from Australia, one from Tonga, and one from Vanuatu.

“We expect over 200 people including swimmers, team officials and technical officials during this three- day meet. Last year, we had 18 teams compete at these nationals, which comprised of nine local teams and nine overseas teams.

“This year, we again see the event attracting overseas teams. In light of future plans.

“We hope this will be an opportunity for our federation to attract overseas competitors to challenge our locals, but through the multiplier effect, allow us to also contribute to the growth of our economy.

“The 2018 overall winners were the mighty Nadi Barracuda Swim Club topping the overall medal tally with 137 gold, 106 silvers, and 77 bronze.

“The title this year will be challenged once again with various swimmers across different clubs giving us a sneak peak with their strong performances at the Fiji Games on the Easter long weekend,” Dugu added.
