The Tavua multi-purpose courts will be a hive of activity the next two days as 30 teams battle it out in the Northwest volleyball rally.

“It is a battle to determine who is the best team in this part of Viti Levu,” organiser Jone Tuwai said.

“The idea behind this event was mooted at Draunivi in Ra two years ago and to have 20 men’s and 10 women’s sides taking part indicates that there is interest out here,” Tuwai said.

The two day event starts tomorrow and it will round up on Friday.

Former national rep Marika Toutou’s Brothers Green side are starting off as favourites.

Former national setter Viliame Bulu, has put out a challenge that his Rivers White side are not returning home empty handed after Friday.

“Following our first tournament at the Vatukaloko Secondary School ground two years ago, we kept close contact with teams in the area,” he said.

“Despite the COVID in 2020 and 2021 clubs from Ba, Tavua, Vatukoula, Nasivi, Vatukaloko, tikina Nailega and Nabouva continued playing volleyball at every chance they can get.

“This is one way we can develop players, technical officials and administrators.

Meanwhile the youth officer Ba/Tavua Livai Seruvatu and Tavua Community Policing officer Timoci Bakanivesi have come on board encouraging villages and communities to form volleyball teams.

“This is one way also to keep youths out of mischief, keeping them away from criminal activities by taking up sports.”

Teams on the men’s list include Nabz Warriors (Wainibuka), Naidrodro Selection, Lomaivuna and Stonewatch (Vatukaloko).

Ba will field five men's and two women's teams, Waikoula Franchise have eight men's and four women while Wainibuka has confirmed six men's and two women's teams.

In the women category, the 2021 Western Club Championship Semi-finalist Titans are in.

Police Blues had defeated Redline in the first Men's Open tournament held last month. Western champs Flames from Lautoka had beaten Resilient Club in the women’s final.
