The Golden Gloves championship that starts today in Suva will pick out top four boxers of each weight division, says boxing head coach Cam Todd.
"It gives me a chance to look at all the fighters because we had our number one's last year," Todd said.
"These boxers don't automatically hold on to their spot as they have to earn it all the time.
"We have some internationals coming next month; I can pick a team for that."
The boxing programme this year is rolling with a few junior and youth tournaments.
"This gives me a chance to look at youth and junior boxers, which is a big part of my programme this year," he said.

"More importantly the boxers get competition; there will be semifinals and finals so the winner will have to fight twice.
"It's a good way to start the year with two fights."
Todd is expecting 100 boxers in the two-day boxing tournament.
"We should have good numbers in the competition," he said.
"Amateur boxing is a huge feature in the sports of Fiji.
"These boxers will need support so come along, make some noise and enjoy boxing."
Todd said he saw so much talents and ability in his short time here.
"We had a good year last year with the Pacific Games and I'm expecting a bigger year," he said.
"Some of our junior and youth boxers have a big future in Fiji and overseas."
Todd is urging more women to join amateur boxing as the sports teaches self-defence and offers opportunities for individuals to represent their nation.
The Golden Gloves championship has weight divisions from sub junior, youth and elite.
The tournament is held today and tomorrow at the Stan Brown boxing gym.
