West Students With Special Needs Take Part In Games

Social support is very important if we are to recognise our fellow citizens with special needs.

Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports, Rovereto Nayacalevu made the remarks at the official opening of the McDonalds Western Council of Special and Inclusive Educators (WESTCOSIE) Sports Games 2022 at Prince Charles Park, Nadi yesterday.

This year’s theme – ‘We are visible’.

“Sports continue to be the major vehicle for youth development as we continue to recognise their contribution to Fiji’s economy, national unity and social inclusion,” Nayacalevu said.

“It has multiple effect on any nation or society. I am encouraged to note that this inclusive sports programme was adopted with the commitment of the organisations to bridge gaps and ensure the participation of children with special needs.

“While interacting with fellow citizens with special needs, you’ll have others to give you encouragement when you need it, as well as hold you accountable to your goals. Plus, you’ll be motivated by seeing positive results,” he said.

WESTCOSIE president Kailash Pillay said the organisation comprised of six special schools.

“A social programme has been organised where they showcase their dancing talents and opportunities to innovate their social skills.”

Special Olympics Fiji Sports Director Robin Dayal said there were spots for Team Fiji to compete at the Special Olympics World Games 2023 to be held in Berlin, Germany.

“Some of the athletes from the special and inclusive schools missed out in the Special Olympics at Natabua High School a few weeks ago. We delayed the naming of the squad,” said Dayal.

McDonalds Fiji, Fiji Sports Commission, Goodman Fielder, Aqua Pacific, and Sharma Music are co-sponsors of the Games.
