“As a player we often think that we know everything when it is not true. When learning about the roles coaches play, I realised that I still got to learn more if I have to upgrade my skills.”

Two women were among the 18 participants that attended a three-day football coaching course in Labasa, over the weekend.

Labasa Women’s football reps Jotivini Tabua and Serai Banaca indicated that it was an ideal course where they were able to further develop their knowledge about the sport.

“We’ve learnt a lot,” Tabua said.

“As a player we often think that we know everything when it is not true. When learning about the roles coaches play, I realised that I still got to learn more if I have to upgrade my skills.”

Banaca said there was no shortcut to success as they have got to learn to do the basics right.

Fiji Football Association’s head of education and acting technical director Yogendra Dutt facilitated the course.

“This course is for people who intend to coach at schools or youth level in their respective districts or communities,” the former Ba head coach said.

“The important aspect of this course is the coaching process. That is on how to plan, prepare and conduct or evaluate a session. What they will coach and the important keys about coaching.

“There are theory and practical sessions whereby they deliver and I provide them with feedbacks on the positive aspect and areas of improvement in their sessions,” he said.

Fiji FA development officer North Sanaila Bera said the participants received an accredited certificate of participation and that would qualify them to coach at youth level.
