A young Valkyries women's 7s team are ready to punch above their weight when the Fun Flavor Super Seven women series kicks off in Lawaqa park, Sigatoka today.
They head into Pool A with favourites Mount Masada and Striders.
The youngsters have some big shoes to fill after five of their players have moved on joining other clubs and or have signed up for overseas contracts.
Valkyries no longer have the services of Fijiana 7s player Aloesi Nakoci who will feature for Mount Masada today. Kelera Dikala, Merewalesi Wakado, Lily Viwa and Salaseini Railumu now play in China for the Beijing Rugby Club.
Speaking to Sunsports coach Sera Raisulu believes it is time for the players to step up.
“We had spent the last three weeks preparing for this week's Super 7s series,” Raisulu said.
“Our main goal is to gain exposure and experience,” she said.
“We are going in to give these big teams a good run for their money.
“Five of our players have moved on with their rugby career, leaving space for these young girls to step up and display their worth.
“During training we have been focusing on basics of rugby.
“At the same time we are developing these young ladies for the long run.
“These young players will come in handy when they are matured.
“Nakoci’s presence at training always boosts the girls but for now we don’t know if she will return to play with us.”
“The girls are super excited to participate today because it has been a long time since they had played in a similar competition.”
In their first match Valkyries take on Striders at 9.30am today.
