The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) and the Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) have strengthened their commitment to grassroots sport with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The MOU is aimed to expand football and community development across the country.
Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said the agreement was a major step forward for national sport development.
“We believe it is very, very important for the nation,” Yusuf said.
He added that Fiji FA strongly supports the Commission’s community-focused vision.
“We truly believe in FNSC’s vision for development of sports in this country, especially targeting the community.”
Yusuf added the impact of joint outreach programmes in remote areas, where coaches have worked through the Commission’s community network.
He also acknowledged the role of FNSC official Joji Liga.
FNSC CEO Peter Mazey said the partnership reflects a broader strategic shift as sport continues to grow in Fiji.
“Sports is becoming a huge business in Fiji and we’re making major changes and working closer with our partners in particular with Fiji FA,” Mazey said.
“The Police and the Ministry of Women are saying that whenever we take our programmes to villages, they see a drop in crime, abuse and drug usage.”
He added: “It’s not just about winning, it’s about participating.”
