The Ba women’s football team leads Group A of the Oceania Football Oceania Confederations (OFC) Women’s Champions League with three points. They opened their campaign with a convincing 6-0 win over Henderson Eels at the National Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on Sunday.

Speaking to OFC Media, Ba forward Koleta Likuculacula said they would need to improve their fitness ahead of their next match against Hekari women’s side from Papua New Guinea.

“We came out with the win and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” she said.

“I’m thankful to the girls for their performance.”

Likuculacula acknowledged divine intervention in the victory.

“We’ll take it one game at a time with two more games to go. We have to work on our weaknesses as well.”

Likuculacula said the team’s blend of young and experienced players has developed strong chemistry on the field.

“We’ve been together since we were younger, so the combinations just came naturally. I want to thank our families and fans for supporting us since day one.”

She dedicated the victory to the mothers of all the team members. She scored two goals in the emphatic win.

Head coach Charlene Lockington described Papua New Guinea-based Hekari women as a strong side that would provide a tough challenge.

‘Every game is a final, and we have the Melanesian teams in one pool, so it’s a tough pool. We’ll go back to the drawing board and plan our next move.”
