Singh Positive With His First Football Journey

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and this augurs well with Bucalevu Secondary School student Patrick Gabriel Singh.

Singh, 16 is representing Taveuni against Savusavu in the Fiji Football Association’s Digicel Senior League on Sunday.

Singh who is the youngest in the side is originally from Dreketi, Macuata; he has maternal links to Rotuma.

His was spotted two weeks ago by Taveuni coach Billy Hus­sain.

Singh hopes to be a national rep one day. He plays centre back and right link positions.

“I have once represented Bua Youths in 2020 and after this due to COVID-19 I took some time off to focus in my studies,” Singh said

“I am grateful to my father, who has always sacrificed his free time since I was five-years-old to teach me how to play football.

“This is a great opening. This is also my first step to getting to where I aim to be for football.

“I hope to be in the national Under-20 one day.

The second eldest of three siblings says his father; always promotes football to youths as it keeps them away from crime.

44-year-old Singh senior played for the Tailevu North, Dreketi and Police football clubs rep.

Taveuni District Football president Basant Prasad said: “Patrick has been playing for the Service Football Club in the Taveuni Regional Football League along with his father, Gyan Singh, the station officer of Taveuni Police Station.”

“We are working towards soccer development on the island and inclusion of youths is one of the ways forward,” he said.

Prasad confirmed that SFC was the only club that has a fe­male player.

“Roamona Moi is a police officer and we are grateful to have her playing football, her participation will encourage other women to join in our effort towards gender equality.

“We are hope to have more women on Taveuni play foot­ball.”
