The Lautoka Maroon’s Under-12 girl’s netball side executed a brilliant defensive game plan to defeat favourites Suva Orchids 22-12 in the Tier 1 semi-final yesterday.

The side reached the final of the Crest Fiji Primary Schools Netball tournament at Subrail Park in Labasa.

Team secretary, Emali Nenewa, said the final result showed their determination to beat a strong team.

Nenewa said they began the tournament with good wins and built a winning culture early to apply pressure on their opponents.

“We had a game plan to counter Suva from all facets of the court, but I believed their quick transition in passes helped them keep the pressure on the capital side,” she said.

Nenewa told the girls to stay humble as this was the starting of their netball journey.

She said every ball possession matters in netball and they maintained large periods of the game with possession.

“We are trying to build a good side in the coming years with Under-13 and Under-14 being the targets,” she said.

Nenewa said despite the scorching heat in Labasa, they managed to cope with it.

She reiterated that every good team learns from their mistakes and improve on their performance.
