The Fiji Pearls netball team is in the final phase of its preparation for the Four Nations Spirit Series in Sydney, Australia, from July 8 to 11.

Head coach Michelle Parsons told SUNsports that her players are working hard to understand the skills and tactical plans introduced during their training sessions.

“They are adapting to the new strength and conditioning (S&C) training and recovery protocols,” she said.

“We need to expect some chaos as we are all learning and connecting. From the chaos, some magic will come, especially with the work ethic and the attitudes of the players.”

Parsons said most of her players have individual performance goals for each match.

“These are the focus for each game,” she said.

“My expectations are that, during the tour, each player will understand their strengths and capabilities, analyse the previous game, and take those lessons into the next game.”

Recovery protocols

Parsons added that the players will also learn to adhere to recovery protocols and follow the food plan set by the performance nutritionist during the tour.

“We are wary of all teams,” she said.

“We know that there has been investment in the development of those teams, and we face each of them with the utmost respect.”

Parsons revealed that time has been a challenge in preparing the team within such a short period for the Spirit Series.

Own inspiration

“The girls have had venue challenges, including not being able to secure a regular facility to train,” she said.

“In saying that, we are adaptable and very much have a ‘what can we do’ mindset, so challenges are met and accepted, and then we problem-solve to come up with solutions that are best for the players.”

Parsons advised her players to have courage and remain calm in each match.

“We are our own inspiration,” she said.

“They approach each session and each situation as a team and embrace the learning.

“Their connectedness and focus drive our environment and their expectations of excellence in performance.”

Parsons urged her team to be consistent in their performance under pressure.

“The players are excited to wear their national uniform and represent their families, communities, clubs, schools, and country,” she said.

“They will be working to find their new best, and I hope they have the support to celebrate them as strong female ambassadors for their country.
