Fiji and the Pacific sporting community are mourning the loss of one of their most iconic figures, Unaisi Rokoura, whose life was tragically cut short in a drowning incident over the weekend.
Known affectionately as Una, Rokoura was more than a netball player. She was a trailblazer, mentor, and multi-sport champion whose influence shaped generations of athletes across the region. Her journey began at just 17 years old when she first donned the Fiji netball jersey, launching a career that would span decades and continents.
In a statement last night, Fiji Netball president RubyAnn Sorovaki paid tribute to Rokoura’s enduring impact: “Una was not only a remarkable athlete and coach but also a mentor and friend to many. Her legacy in Fijian and Pacific sport will live on through the many players and colleagues she influenced."
She added that Rokoura’s passing left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, teammates, and the wider sporting community.
“Fiji Netball extended its deepest condolences to her father Tomu Rokoura, her brother Aseri, sister-in-law Lusi, and her extended family."
Ms Rokoura's body was recovered yesterday from the Rewa River, bringing a tragic end to a multi-day search effort led by the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Navy.
Police confirmed that her body was found near the Waila dredging plant, days after she went missing while collecting freshwater mussels near the Navuso Agriculture School in Nausori.
Rokoura, 47, was swept away by strong currents last Saturday morning while accompanied by a 34-year-old woman and two others. The companion’s body was recovered earlier.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are ongoing.
Rokoura represented Fiji in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, captaining the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006. Her leadership on the court was matched by her versatility off it. She also represented Fiji in hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball, showcasing a rare athleticism and commitment to sport.
Her legacy extended far beyond her playing days. Rokoura held key coaching and development roles, including:
- Fiji Pearls Head Coach (2009–2013, 2022–2024)
- Country Coordinator for NetGO Fiji (2017–2022)
- Head Coach of PNG Pepes (2015–2017) and Consultant Coach for PNG U21
- Fitness Instructor at USP Gym (2007–2014)
At the grassroots level, Rokoura was a driving force behind youth development, serving as coach and player for CBM Netball Club under the Suva Netball Association.
