Labasa produced a dominant attacking display to defeat Navua 5-2 in Round 6 of the Extra Premier League at Subrail Park on Saturday.

The Babasiga Lions took control early, scoring twice in the opening nine minutes through Gerard Avok and Melvin Mani to unsettle the visitors.

Coach Alvin Chand said the result reflected improvements made after last week’s goalless draw against Suva.

“We missed a lot of goal scoring opportunities against Suva, so this week during our training sessions, we ensured players improved in this area,” he said.

Labasa led 2-1 at halftime and maintained their momentum in the second spell, with Aporosa Yada extending the lead with a well-timed volley.

France Catarogo added another after weaving past several defenders before firing into the net, while Avok completed his brace to seal the win.

Chand praised the midfield performance of Akeimi Ralulu and Melvin Mani.

“Akeimi and Melvin did a good job in the midfield third”.

He described the victory as a strong response and dedicated it to supporters.

“The big win is dedicated to our loyal fans”.

Despite the emphatic win, Chand said discipline remained an area of concern after conceding a penalty.

“Getting five goals which help to build confidence in our players to deliver more excellent results”.

“We need to build on this winning momentum for the next round matches,” he emphasised.

Navua vice-president Ronald Chand said the early goals put his side under pressure.

He said the team needed to regroup but remained confident of a comeback.

“Any team that is underestimating Navua, this is a stern warning for them, we will rise up again and beat the top teams,” he added.

Navua’s goals were scored by Jared Rongosulia and Usaia Tilivarua.

Labasa now sit on 11 points and will face Ba away in Round 7.
