Former Fiji rugby player and Flying Fijian #416, Filimoni Seru, passed away yesterday after suffering from motor neuron disease (MND).

A close relative, while confirming his death, requested that privacy be observed.

The late Seru, 55, was recently capped by Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) chief executive officer Koli Sewabu at his home in Levuka.

Seru represented Fiji in both rugby sevens and fifteens. He made his first appearance for the Flying Fijians in 1990 in Nuku’alofa, playing his first Test match against Tonga.

The former Suva Grammar School winger was also a back-to-back secondary schools blue ribbon champion and a key player in the Nabua Rugby Club 7s team, where he played alongside rugby legends Waisale Serevi, Tomasi Cama, the Rauluni brothers, Tomasi Cama, and Pauliasi Tabulutu.

Besides rugby union, he also played rugby league and was part of the 1995 Fiji Bati team that went to the Rugby League World Cup in England and Wales.

He played for several rugby league clubs, including the South Queensland Crushers (1995), Illawarra Steelers (1996–97), and Hull FC (1998–99).

Funeral arrangements will be released later today.
