Newcomers St John’s College (SJC) Under-17 side from Cawaci, Ovalau, made a statement as they thrashed Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) College 32-0 in the opening round of the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition in Suva last Saturday.
Speaking to SUNsports, SJC team manager Josaia Diani said their struggles motivated them to win.
“Finance has been one of our burdens coming from the maritime zone to participate in the mainland,” he said.
“It has been the strength of the parents and ex-scholars trying to see their school achieve something better when it comes to league.
“Overall, the performance was good but there was some hiccups that we need to tighten and make sure that we’ll im-prove on our next game.”
Diani said it was difficult to switch from athletics to rugby league in terms of preparation.
“We are thankful to the principal for allocating time for the students to train and participate in the rugby league competition. Our main target is taking every game as it comes and perform to the best of our ability as a team.”
Diani was confident that their team can replicate their past year’s success in rugby union to rugby league. “We’ll try to make some changes so that everything goes well in our next game next week.
“I thank the ex-scholars and parents for their support as Cawaci is made-up of a family that is in tuned and supportive when it comes to academics and sports as a whole.”
