Getting the call to join the national sevens men’s training squad was a pleasant surprise for Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) student Suliano Savenaca.

While many usually get the call in their 20s, the Wailevu, Tunuloa, Cakaudrove, lad thanked God for allowing this opportunity at 18 years of age.

Savenaca shares maternal links to Yaqeta, Yasawa.

He was the flanker of the RKS team which won the Vodafone Deans Trophy (Under-18) this year.

“I couldn’t believe that I’d join the sevens squad this early,” Savenaca said.

“It caught me by surprise."

Savenaca marched into the national sevens camp this week with team-mate and captain Lemeki Senikau.

They are part of the 33-men squad vying for a spot for the HSBC Dubai 7s and the Korean invitational tournament.

“It’s quite tough; we’re getting used to the sevens training environment and its demands.

“I’ve only watched how forwards like Talacolo (Joseva) play and now learning as much as I can while training with them.”

He said it takes discipline and hardwork to be in the sevens squad.

He advised young players to listen to their parents if they want to be successful elsewhere.

“Many young people nowadays can’t listen at home,” Savenaca said.

“Rugby is an opportunity to earn money so use your talent well and listen to your parents.”
