The Flying Fijians selection for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup is not for experimental purposes, in actual fact it is all about building up towards the Rugby World Cup 2027.

This was the view of Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne as he shared to the media of his intention to introduce fresh talent and build-up on new combinations.

“I think it’s an exciting time for us,” Byrne said.

“The short window in July gave us only two test matches, so it was over before it really started. Now, we’ve come in here, and the boys are excited for it.”

In the selection, Byrne has retained rookies like Sam Wye, Philip Baselala, Mesake Vocevoce, Kavaia Tagivetaua and Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula.

He has brought in seasoned Super Rugby Pacific campaigners of Kemu Valetini, Tuidraki Samusamuvodre and Inia Tabuavou.

Also, Byrne has opted to blood in Fiji men’s sevens star winger Jioji Nasova. He replaces the injured Semi Radradra.

Byrne emphasised the importance of developing squad depth ahead of the RWC, giving emerging players a chance to prove themselves.

“We’re giving some players an opportunity to come into the programme—young players who can show us what they’ve got.

“The PNC is a great chance to build our depth, and it’s important we keep progressing in that direction,” he added.

Byrne stressed that the selected players have earned their spots through strong performances.

“There’s nothing experimental about it. These boys have played well and deserve to be here.

“We’ve had a good training session today, and the mood is positive as we prepare for the challenge ahead.”

The Flying Fijians kick-off their PNC campaign against Tonga next Saturday (August 30) at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The match kicks-off at 3pm.
