There are no excuses, we are here to play, says Fijian men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai.

The Olympian and World Rugby Sevens Player of the Decade made the remarks during the captain’s photo shoot in Townsville, Australia.

Speaking to Oceania Rugby Media Tuwai said, COVID-19 is not an excuse.

“We won’t be taking COVID restrictions as an excuse this is rugby sevens, we don’t make excuses when it comes to sevens rugby,” he said.

“There is no room for excuses heading into this weekend’s competition.

“I want to thank God for the opportunity, and I’m really excited for this weekend it has been a long wait for us.

“I believe the last we played at an international sevens was during the Los Angeles leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series.

“That was the last time we played together as a national team, and we have been playing in local tournaments ever since.”

Tuwai added that the tournament is important for the young players.

“I think it’s especially important for our young boys in the team.

“This is a very good platform to test the team and the boys on how they handle pressure and most importantly playing international teams,” he added.

“I believe these young boys bring something new into the squad and the tournament itself, they are young, excited and very fit.

“They are all focused on the job and right now they just can’t wait to play.

“It’s necessary to come out firing this weekend because we have sacrificed a lot and I believe we are ready to go.”
